New gym opens doors in Westhampton Beach
For close to 20 years, gym owner and trainer Ken Fitzgerald has been commuting between Manhattan and the South Fork to help transform the lives of East End residents and guide them to a more healthy lifestyle.
Early last month, Mr. Fitzgerald opened a new gym called Lift WH Beach. Previously, Mr. Fitzgerald has helped his clients by not only creating fitness plans for them but also showing them how to incorporate the routines into their busy lives.
In the new venture, Mr. Fitzgerald plans to put the emphasis on small group and individual training. “The idea is to have more room for functional and athletic training,” said Mr. Fitzgerald, whose primary residence is in Manhattan. “This is all athletic-based training—the lane is probably something that nobody else in the area has.”
Mr. Fitzgerald was an independent trainer working in Manhattan and Long Island before deciding to open his first gym, Lift Gym NYC in Manhattan, in 1996. He explained that as a personal trainer, he was having trouble finding health facilities that would allow him to work without being a paid employee. His gyms allow trainers to come in and work with their clients, with the goal of building local clientele, without requiring that they be employed by him or pay a fee. In 2007, he opened his second gym, Lift Hampton, located on Montauk Highway in Wainscott.
Mr. Fitzgerald is hoping to focus on keeping personalized training an important aspect of his business. Every client of the gym will receive a free session with a personal trainer each month. According to Mr.Fitzgerald, this will help members track and maintain their fitness goals while also having someone show them new exercises so a workout does not become stagnant.
Classes offered at the gym include cycling, Pilates Reformer, a yoga and stretching class, and boot camp— an intense workout that’s designed to tone the entire body.
“Right now we are working on growing our client base and encouraging people to work closely with their trainer in some form,” Mr. Fitzgerald said. “We want people to take advantage of a lot of the programs we are going to be offering—that is ideal for any club—to grow and retain your membership.”
